In order to make a kitchen safe, efficient, and pleasing to the eye, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Kitchen Space Planning
- It's important to have enough counter space to prepare food (36" is ideal). If it's possible to fit more, do so. Arrange to have at least 24" on one side of the sink, and 18" or more on the other.
- Leave sufficient room between the counter and island (if there is one). Try to leave at least 42" so that there is room for comfortable traffic flow.
- Leave enough floor space so that people can comfortably walk past open appliances and cabinets: 30" to 48" is ideal. You don't want anyone to bump their heads or legs and you want to ensure that the doors do not interfere with each other. This is particularly important in corners.
Kitchen Safety
- Place the oven so that it doesn't block a major thoroughfare. It can be dangerous to have a hot oven where people are constantly walking by (particularly children). Avoid putting the oven near doors to other rooms in the house or the outdoors.
- When planning a kitchen renovation pay close attention to building codes. For example, in many areas there are rules about appliance placement (stoves in particular). If designing a kitchen without the help of a contractor be sure to get a copy of local building codes so that you don't suffer from a surprise at a later stage of the renovation.
- Include enough outlets - with ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) - and place them appropriately so that there aren't too many cords and wires stretching across the room.
